Dr. Joel Thierstein, Associate Provost for Innovative Scholarly Communication at Rice University and Executive Director of Connexions, will be one of two keynote speakers at Plone Symposium East 2011 in May.
Thierstein's talk is titled, "Moving to Mainstream: Connexions and Plone in Everyday Education." A pioneer in digital education since 1999, Connexions is one of the world's largest repositories of open educational resources. A global community of thousands create, share, modify, and vet educational content, which is made available in a variety of formats at no charge.
In addition to his work with Connexions, Thierstein serves as a member of the Board of Directors of the Open CourseWare Consortium and is a founding member of Peer 2 Peer University.
Prior to coming to Rice, he was an Associate Professor and Director of New Media Communications at Oregon State University. He also served as a professor at Baylor University, Purdue University Calumet, and Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville, as well as serving as a visiting professor of Communications Law at Syracuse University. Thierstein has written and presented extensively on the topic of education and media.
Before joining academia, Thierstein was a leader in the communications industry, including radio, television, cable television, and newspaper. He worked with the Advanced Television Systems Committee, the standards setting body for digital television from 1999 to 2009, serving as a voting member from 2002-2009. He maintains his ties to industry by working on projects with companies and organizations including Sony, British Petroleum, and the National Association of Broadcasters.
